With the real threat of information theft we all need to be even more diligent about securing our information. You see, the bad guys are now targeting the lesser secured environments like homes and small to medium sized businesses because the all the big business players have the money required, hired the IT staff necessary and built intrusion detection systems that have made it difficult to even try to access most corporate networks. The best the bad guys can hope for now is to have some lesser trained employee open up a virus infected email, causing a breach in the corporate network structure.

SecurityOur research tells us that a whopping 90% of homes and small to medium sized businesses do not have any security features implemented. Of the 10% that do, only half of them have current security measures in place. The firewall that ships with Microsoft product is a good start, but that is it. It is just a start. A castle was built with a mote, a draw bridge, big walls (usually on a hill), and they always had a back door in case they needed an escape route. Like the castles, computer security cannot stop with one simple firewall. Remember that anti-virus programs are not security. They are simply inoculants against virus infection. They cannot guarantee a totally virus free experience and certainly have no firewall capabilities. If you buy a dual purpose product, like a Symantec Internet Security solution, then you are getting a dual purpose program. This in no way is meant to trivialize the need for an anti-virus program either. It too is one of the necessary defense mechanisms required for a safe computing experience.

In business, the threat is not only the Internet, but also internal threats, lack of update management, and the absence of a maintenance and disaster recovery plan.

So ... the big question is – “what can I do to protect myself and / or my business?”
