MySpace
23 May, 2007
I don’t know if anyone has been paying much attention to the news about MySpace. When ever I mention it, I usually get an audience that will roll their eyes and you can almost hear them thinking “here he goes again”. This is a direct quote from an article that surfaced on Google News:
“MySpace, owned by News Corp., partnered with Sentinel Tech Holding Corp., to compile information on sex offenders in the United States. The site has already deleted about 7,000 profiles out of about 180 million.”
That means that 7,000 Sex offenders had profiles on MySpace, now after reading that, how do you feel about your children participating in MySpace? If it is the same as me it will go something like this – MySpace is here to stay for a while yet anyways. So what can I do? As a network administrator, I know I can control dangerous sites from all networks that I administer. But, the helpless children surfing on unrestricted computers or networks like libraries, other public access computers and even more bone chilling, what about using their friend’s computers?
I would like to offer up another tangible solution. Since we cannot shut down MySpace, and we cannot watch over every child, what about helping each other by Educating parents and children alike regarding the dangers that exist in the cyber world so they can protect themselves? CIA Computing will provide seminars for “Keeping Children Safe on the Internet” Free of charge to help fight against child abduction, abuse, Internet bulling and much more.
